Fair enough. But I work for a company that owns three small weeklies with circulation less than 5,000. TPM is a national media outlet that probably can boast serious traffic figures to advertisers.
TPM is not helping build community and disseminate information about Batavia, NY, or Blue Hill, ME. To do that you need a different model. I think all Owens is suggesting is we try going back to how newspapers got their start, not because of shady ethical practices, but because at their start all newspapers were by necessity hyperlocal (don't you just love buzz words). What is a hyperlocal business model online? My apologies, that should have been my question from the start.
