Re: Rationalizing a retreat back to a time of much-lower j-standards
by
Anonymous
Here are the salient facts for this argument. Journalism, whatever it is, takes time to produce. In our world, time costs money, so journalism costs money. Anything that costs money is subject to corruption, especially when dealing so sensitively in the business matters of a community as a newspaper or newssite does.
While you skewer Owens for running ads in the midst of his copy flow, what would you propose? Owens may be a brash character, but he is taking a chance and experimenting. What are you doing? Arguing the merits of click-through ads between content pages? Pop up javascript ads in the middle of a page? Personally I would rather have a lamp or coupons to local business foisted on me than the Sprint ads stuck half-way through stories on sites like Villagesoup.com.
Please do not construe this as an attempt to debase your opinions, for they are your own. Rather I would like you to stop deconstructing the perceived negative aspects of someone else's business model and build one of your own. As far as I can tell, no one has yet built a successful model online so you probably haven't either.
