who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Re: Re: The Alberta shootings

We'll need more information before we know what, if anything, could have been done to prevent the officers' deaths. Most people already have respect for lawful authority. The last time there was this much carnage in a single incident was in 1995 during the Riel Rebellion. Frankly, there are more dangerous jobs in this country than being a police officer. The shooter in this case sounds like a disturbed and dangerous person. I'm not sure how you would teach someone like that a "greater respect for lawful authority." I don't think the impending decriminalization of marijuana is a big factor here. Canada's a small country. Most of our marijuana production is, I suspect, destined for export markets. But there's only two ways I can see to take the profit out of grow ops: Raising enforcement levels to the point that it's virtually certain the grow op will be shut down quickly enough that no money can be made from it, along with the arrest and conviction of the operator(s); or making marijuana legal. Are we prepared to spend much, much more on enforcement than we're spending now? And if society goes that route, won't it just end up raising the price and profit potential? If there's big bucks to be made in providing an illicit good, there will always be criminals around who will try to exploit that demand. And so far, our efforts at reducing demand for marijuana have been spectacularly ineffective. So where does that leave society?
