Your amusement is justified.
I would expect that if someone from the CIA or wherever sees a factual mistake on a Wiki (misspelled name, wrong date), then they should have the right to fix it.
The problem begins if someone or some group is trying to anonymously game the Wiki.
If everyone were honest, open and neutral, then Wikis would work fine. Possibly they still work fine for certain topics.
But during the 2004 U.S. presidential election, the entries for John Kerry and George Bush had to be shut down because of the non-stop partisan vandalism.
However, that seems to be the logical outcome of having digital information that can be easily and anonymously altered by anybody.
