who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Any views expressed here are my own.

A top FBI official told a Timesman about the events swirling behind what came to be known as the Watergate scandal well before the Washington Post got into the act. And he told an editor ... and the whole thing went nowhere.

And as a result, the Washington Post sailed off into journalistic history.

From the subhead to an essay by U.S. j-prof and social critic Todd Gitlin: "Circulation, revenue, attention, authority, and deference: a host of troubles force the diminishing of news in the United States."

He argues that a public model, guided by non-profit boards, might be the way of the futue.

View Article  Odd questions from the bench about protecting sources

The Crown attorneys in the confidential sources case revolving around documents given to National Post reporter Andrew McIntosh seem to be suggesting that journalists could suppress crimes if journalists could protect the identity of confidential sources.

Worse, they seem to have a sympathetic ear from the judges on the Supreme Court of Canada panel hearing the case.

View Article  Reporting on political corruption -- do more deep digging

Speaking on CBC Radio's The Current on Tuesday, historian Michael Bliss said he thinks the news media in Canada have too often given politicians an easy ride when covering corruption issues.

"The Oliphant inquiry in Canada is a nice example of this. We're having this inquiry so long after the fact because in Canada, we don't do enough investigative journalism," he said.

Bliss credited the CBC, particularly the investigative TV show The Fifth Estate, for continuing to pursue the story, but he should have given some credit to The Globe and Mail as well.

"My sense is that the more investigation the media does -- the more active and more critical the media is-- the better. The danger is that as the media weakens in the current Internet age, we'll see less and less of it," he said.

You can find the interview here. The passage I cite above is about 15 minutes in.

View Article  Wolfram|Alpha

Wolfram|Apha, a new online tool, goes a step further than Wikipedia. It seems to want to become a computational Google, if I can put it that way.

From its intro:

Wolfram|Alpha's long-term goal is to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone. We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method, and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything. Our goal is to build on the achievements of science and other systematizations of knowledge to provide a single source that can be relied on by everyone for definitive answers to factual queries.

Wolfram|Alpha aims to bring expert-level knowledge and capabilities to the broadest possible range of people—spanning all professions and education levels. Our goal is to accept completely free-form input, and to serve as a knowledge engine that generates powerful results and presents them with maximum clarity.
