I'm shaking my head about the "controversy" over the New Yorker cover treatment of the Obamas' fist bump.
The Barry Blitt cartoon was clearly a shot at the Fox News blowhard who declared it to be a "terrorist" bump, and at those in general who see Obama as being some type of Muslim menace (I'm on vacation, and I was talking a few days ago to a woman from the red state of Kansas who feared Obama might be a closet Muslim).
If some people are upset about this cartoon, then clearly they have no appetite for satire and likely don't follow the news on a regular basis. It would be redundant to say they are almost guaranteed not to be regular New Yorker readers.
This is an interesting NYT story about how TV satirists are finding difficulty in practicing their malicious art upon Obama:
The reason cited by most of those involved in the shows is that a fundamental factor is so far missing in Mr. Obama: There is no comedic “take” on him, nothing easy to turn to for an easy laugh, like allegations of Bill Clinton’s womanizing, or President Bush’s goofy bumbling or Al Gore’s robotic persona.
“The thing is, he’s not buffoonish in any way,” said Mike Barry, who started writing political jokes for Johnny Carson’s monologues in the waning days of the Johnson administration and has lambasted every presidential candidate since, most recently for Mr. Letterman. “He’s not a comical figure,” Mr. Barry said.
