who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Any views expressed here are my own.
View Article  'Long live al Qaeda'

That was reportedly one of the chants at a protest in Jalalabad, Afghanistan today -- another over the Danish Muhammad cartoon/Dutch Qu'ran film imbroglio.

Jalalabad is where al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden made his final appearance before going underground. Tora Bora, a major al Qaeda complex, lies to the southeast in the White Mountains.

U.S. troops operate in eastern Afghanistan.

To date, I haven't heard reports of protests in either Helmand, where the Danes are, or Uruzgan, which is where Dutch troops are based.

View Article  Bad parking takes streetcar riders hostage

Congratulations to the owner of a black Honda Civic coupe parked on the north side of Queen St. West just east of Manning this afternoon!

Because you were parked at least 50 centimetres away from the snowbank/curb, your driver's-side mirror was just out far enough to catch a 501 streetcar's commercial sign.

As a result, you tied up not one, but two of those streetcars! Well done!

Let's conservatively say 100 people per double-car; that's 200 people you inconvenienced through lousy parking.

If you have an impish sense of humour, sir or madam, allow yourself a giggle at all those pissed-off people stuck because of you and your car.

And be thankful the TTC operator didn't listen to those who urged him to press through and knock your mirror off.

View Article  No Number of the Beast on Bathurst

While stopped in a southbound Bathurst streetcar at Harbord, I looked across to the west side of the street and noted the house numbers.

These units were numbered 664, 664A ... and 668.

Where did 666 go in that sequence? An innocent oversight, or a conscious act of discrimination against the Antichrist?

BTW, one of my favourite album titles ever is from a 1980s-era Montreal punk band called My Dog Popper. Their signature tune was Acid Flashback, which is about Ronald Reagan experiencing such an event and hallucinating that two Sandinistas were sodomizing him.

Anyway, the album's title? 668: The Neighbour of the Beast. :)
