A week after he was mistaken for an IT expert with a similar name, Guy Goma was back on News 24 today in an interview almost as painful as his original appearance.

Here's The Independent's preview article. Note the candour:

To put a rock star at the helm of a national newspaper might seem eccentric, but it is becoming an increasingly used tactic as publications seek to use key individuals to raise their profiles and emphasise their brand values.

So, with an enthusiasm bordering on abandon, editors are handing over their hard-won seats to novelists, footballers, artists and minor royalty.

Here's a sample from the AP story on CTV.ca:

Rock star Bono, who has long complained that Africa's problems get little attention in the news, guest edited Tuesday's edition of The Independent newspaper, filling its pages with stories on AIDS, poverty and global warming.

The newspaper's front page featured a headline saying, "No News Today,'' with the footnote: "Just 6,500 Africans died today as a result of a preventable, treatable disease (HIV/AIDS).''

The poor Beeb. Both the Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese lambaste it for biases. Bernard Gabony, the Beeb Online's South Asia editor, addresses the issue in this mildly self-serving column.

However, I think he does capture -- in a BBC sort of way -- the frustrations of covering a conflict where good information is sometimes hard to come by, and where no mistake is innocent.
