who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Although the U.S. newspaper industry cut 2,000 jobs last year, j-school enrolment went up. But this NYT story claims that new grads might have better skills sets for today's jobs than vets.

View Article  Huffington Post building an audience

When I first heard about the Huffington Post, I was mildly critical. In the intervening year since it's launched, it's still not a must-read for me, although Arianna Huffington is one of my favourite all-time talk show guests.

View Article  Start booking tee times, San Jose

I caught the third period of Game 5 between the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks.

Twelve seconds in, it was 3-1 Oilers. By the time the third period was three minutes old, it was tied at three.

Holy shit, I thought to myself: We have a game!

But by the time it was all over, the Oil had won 6-3. The Oil scored those six goals on 18 shots. The Sharks didn't give Oiler goalie Dwayne Roloson a night from hell: He only faced 24 shots.

If the Sharks come back to win this series (the Oil lead 3 games to 2, and have won three straight), then they are mentally tough enough to win the Stanley Cup this year.

But somehow, I don't think so. They came back with a vengeance at the beginning of the third, but the Oil emerged the better team. San Jose started taking dumb penalties -- the most definitive sign that you've given up.

I'm predicting Edmonton moves on in this series, and I further predict their series with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks will start on Friday, with the Oil harpooning the Sharks Wednesday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
