who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Any views expressed here are my own.
View Article  Uh, Globe Sports, a small oversight ...

My corporate cousins at The Globe and Mail (I work for CTV News; both CTV News and The Globe are part of Bell Globemedia) launched a revamped sports news website on Wednesday: Globesports.

All fine and dandy, but with one crucial missing bit of information: TV times and broadcasters!!!

Rand Beers worked in counter-terrorism in the administrations of four different U.S. presidents (he quit Dubya's over differences on Iraq). Democracy Now! talked to him about the controversy over the Condi Rice/George Tenet meeting over a looming threat of a terror attack on the United States itself.

View Article  Movies to watch for this weekend

In no particular order:

1. The Trailer Park Boys.

2. The Departed

3. The Last King of Scotland

Gotta see the Boys! They are classic characters of Canadian white trash culture! :)

The Departed is a Martin Scorsese remake of Infernal Affairs, a fine 2003 Hong Kong film starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung.

And finally, Forest Whitaker has been a consistently fine actor throughout his career (he goes back to Fast Times at Ridgemont High!). The clownish despot Idi Amin was one of the most horrifyingly fascinating figures of the last 50 years. I have no doubt Whitaker will bring the character to life onscreen and make him indelible -- or at least small enough doubts that I'm willing to risk $12. :)

View Article  Mark Foley, disgraced ... Democrat?!?!

Interesting catch by The Daily Show tonight: In some Fox News footage of disgraced ex-congressman Mark Foley, the notoriously conservative network "supered" him thusly: D-FL.

Well, 'R' (Foley is a Republican) and 'D' are very close together on a standard keyboard, so it was probably just a typo.

Fox News: They report. You decide.

Jonno made some satiric fun of what appears to be Foley's textbook attempts to gain sympathy and contain the damage.

Since it came out that he'd engaged in sexually explicit online conversations with teenage male pages, the 52-year-old Foley -- again, a Republican --  has confessed that:

  • He's an alcoholic (with emotional problems)
  • He's checked himself into rehab
  • He's gay
  • He was sexually abused as a teen by a clergyman (Note: The last two were through his lawyer)

Added Stewart: "And 9/11 changed everything." :^)
