who employs me
I am a staff writer with CTV.ca News. That operation is part of CTV News, which is of course nestled into CTV Inc. and CTVglobemedia.

I don't speak for my employer on this blog. I don't comment about the internal affairs of my employer.

Any views expressed here are my own.
View Article  A belated happy first birthday to this blog!

For some reason I thought it was this week, but actually, my blog had its first birthday on Aug. 12.

Wow. Time flies when you're having virtual fun! :)

So far, so good. It's been an enjoyable hobby to date, and I hope to keep this blog going in the days, hours and minutes to come.

I'm not a parent, but perhaps those who both parent and blog could answer the following: Is it the same or worse to snub your blog's birthday than a small child's, or do small humans trump binary creations every time?

It's not an entirely stupid and facetious question -- although I concede that's open for interpretation.

View Article  Ads on CBC.ca?!?!

I offer the following without (much) comment:

Since I live in constant fear of evidence showing me to be an early-onset Alzheimer's case, can anyone tell me whether they've ever seen a commercial ad on CBC.ca before, say, 12:02 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, 2005?

I honestly don't remember seeing one. But if one managed to spring up within hours (minutes?) of a lockout being declared, perhaps one could draw the conclusions that:

a) CBC management had been planning this for a while, and

b) They're looking for sources of revenue to offset the cost of the lockout?

View Article  Terrorism in Canada? Been there, done that

I quite liked Tony Keller's commentary in the Sunday Star on terrorism in this country from 35 years ago, and the lessons it holds for today.

View Article  Teaching normal people to kill

By and large, causing another human being's death is not such an easy thing for most of us to do.

This Toronto Star article talks about how militaries (and presumably others) train people to overcome that natural reticence.

View Article  And they're out

Just after midnight, CBC locked out the 5,500 members of the Canadian Media Guild.

The issue is outsourcing (read this CTV.ca story for a primer; here's The Globe and Mail's story).

Here's on blog that will undoubtedly pay great attention to this dispute: Todd Maffin's I Love Radio.

Oddly enough, one place to get CBC employee views on this is at CBC Watch, a decidedly non-pro-Corpse site.

I don't know if they'll have much to say on the dispute, but here's the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting link.

One that definitely has lots to say is Our Public Airwaves -- which sees the underfunding of the CBC as the root of pretty much every form of evil in this world. :)
