Five men acquitted in a globally notorious gang rape case in Pakistan have seen those acquittals reversed by Pakistan's Supreme Court.

An excerpt from the BBC story:

The Lahore High Court had in March acquitted five men accused of raping Mukhtar Mai in 2002, allegedly on a village council's order.

Ms Mai, who had appealed against the acquittals, said she was delighted with the decision.

The court ordered the men be detained in custody.

'Lack of evidence'

On Tuesday the Supreme Court agreed to suspend the acquittals following appeals by Ms Mai and the government against them.

The court has not yet set a date for formally hearing Ms Mai's and the government's appeals.

The court has ordered 14 men - the five acquitted by the Lahore court, a sixth man whose death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by that court and another eight men acquitted at the original trial - be held in custody.

Ms Mai, who was in court with human rights activists to hear the ruling, said she hoped she would finally get justice.
