Antonia Zerbisias has a posting about Rogers' OMNI 1 getting slapped by the Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council for this little ditty from Jimmy Swaggart on same-sex marriage:
... I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry [Swaggart laughs; audience applauds]. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died [audience applause]. ...
Zerby asks:
What I want to know is ...
These cases turn up with altogether too much regularity in Canada, thanks to broadcasters selling airtime to these rubes. Are they so desperate to fill their schedules?
A better question is, if this happens with regularity, why doesn't the CRTC slap the same conditions on them as they did on al-Jazeera?
And if you're wondering, it is the same Jimmy Swaggart who became an object of ridicule in the late 1980s after news about his dalliances with a prostitute became public.
(Man, those were the days of televangelist scandals! Have there there any good ones in recent years?)
