I don't know if you saw The Globe and Mail on Thursday, but it had an interesting story about how just-re-elected British Prime Minister Tony Blair told The Sun, the Brit tabloid, that he has manfully pleasured Mrs. Blair up to five times in one night.

An excerpt:

It's no coincidence that both headline-grabbing events involve The Sun, the racy tabloid owned by Australian magnate Rupert Murdoch. With an astonishing 10 million readers, the paper has become a key catalyst of British politics, and the central plank in the platform that will almost certainly deliver Mr. Blair a third majority government tonight.

Mr. Blair's courtship of The Sun is legendary, but probably reached a new plateau with the paper's front-page exclusive interview at his country estate, Chequers.

In an exchange that the paper gleefully reported and that was picked up in this morning's editions of most British papers, the Sun photographer asked the 51-year-old Prime Minister just how fit he was. Very, he answered, humbly.

"What," the shooter asked, "five times a night?" Mr. Blair readily responded: "At least -- I can do it more depending how I feel." Even a seasoned tabloid reporter found this surprising. "Are you up to it?" he asked.

At this point, Cherie Blair stepped in, answering: "He always is!"

Beyond the raised eyebrows and the laughter, what is most extraordinary is Mr. Blair's cultivated use of The Sun -- extending, it seems, to the very specific tastes of a readership that mixes its socially conservative politics with fully nude women on Page 3.

I'm wondering if this virility question should become a mandatory part of every leadership debate.

And what proof should the leader be required to provide?

Is a Tony and Cherie video far from the shelves of Britain's more lowbrow stores? :)
