The highest-profile anonymous source of them all has apparently stepped out of the shadows.

An excerpt from the CBC.ca story:

W. Mark Felt, a former deputy associate director of the FBI has been identified as "Deep Throat," according to an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

Felt, who lives in Santa Rosa, Calif., has long been suspected of being the anonymous source used by the Washington Post to break the Watergate scandal, leading to former U.S. president Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974.

The article, to appear in the July issue of Vanity Fair, says the 91-year-old's two children persuaded their father to come forward. Felt gave the article's author, John D. O'Connor, permission to reveal his identity.

Carl Bernstein, who along with Bob Woodward, became famous for their work on the Watergate story, has refused to confirm Felt's claim, saying he and Woodward would only identify the source after the person died.

The only other person who supposedly knows DT's ID is Ben Bradlee, the legendary former editor of the Post.

A couple years ago, some University of Illinois journalism students did a project called Deep Throat Uncovered. It identified Deputy White House Counsel Fred Fielding as Deep Throat.

Right or wrong (and it would be wrong if Felt's claim is correct), it was an interesting project.
