I was riding the College St. streetcar the other day. Its forward progress was stalled by a double-parked cab. The streetcar operator honked his annoyance.

"Why not just hit him (with the street car)?" I asked innocently.

"I'd love to!" laughed the streetcar driver. "And if it was my last day at work, I would!"

The driver went on to say that particular cab driver had passed him only minutes before, so it wasn't like he didn't know a streetcar is coming.

Now, when you ride cabs downtown, the cabbies all say streetcars are the bane of their existence.

"Think about it: They're a train," one cabbie told me.

They would love to see them all off the road and replaced by buses.

Can't say I'm with the cabbies on this one.
