The awards are from the Writers Guild of America.

An excerpt:

Eternal Sunshine, a trip through the minds of lovers Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, won best original screenplay at the Writers Guild of America Awards.

And Sideways, a bittersweet comedy about two men in mid-life crisis, won best adapted screenplay on Saturday.

The awards could point towards possible success at next week's Oscars.

Sideways
Sideways is nominated for a total of five Academy Awards
Eternal Sunshine, written by Charlie Kaufman, is nominated for original screenplay at the Oscars.

Sideways, by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, is up for best adapted screenplay among its total of five nominations.

At the Writers Guild ceremony in Hollywood, Eternal Sunshine beat off competition from The Aviator, Garden State, Hotel Rwanda and Kinsey.

And Sideways triumphed over Million Dollar Baby, The Motorcycle Diaries, Before Sunset and Mean Girls.

I saw Sideways and quite enjoyed it (I'm in the target demographic :) ). Actually, while having lunch with a friend (who is also in the target demographic), we were quite amused by the mental image of hundreds of cars full of middle-aged men running around the Niagara Peninsula looking for waitresses to hit on. :)

I've not yet seen Eternal Sunshine, but I've heard good things about it.
