Pony up: Taking wagers on some new editors-in-chief
Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - Page B2
Now that my good friend John Honderich has departed the Toronto Star, the newspaper his family ran for more than 50 years, the man who effectively displaced him, publisher Michael Goldbloom, is looking to fill the other title Honderich had arrogated -- editor-in-chief.
A number of candidates have been identified, including the peripatetic Kirk LaPointe (odds: 10-1), who's held three or four senior journalistic jobs in the past five years; Murdoch Davis, who used to work for the Aspers (40-1); Bob Hepburn, a Star columnist for the past couple of eons (999-1); and Fred Kuntz, who overhauled the Kitchener-Waterloo Record(1,000-1). But keep your eye on Andrew Phillips, currently editor of the Aspers' Victoria Times-Colonist, who has the distinction of being both smart and nice, a rare combination.
Meanwhile, a similar search is under way at the Toronto Sun. After three years, Mike Therien is moving to another struggling Sun tabloid, in Ottawa. Among the bruited candidates for this unenviable job are Michael Cooke, Chicago Sun-Times editor and long-time veteran of the late and unlamented Conrad Black empire (20-1); veteran newspaper man Steve Petherbridge (40-1), and Jim Jennings, a big cheddar in the Society for Newspaper Design.
