That not all judges agree shows that press freedom, guaranteed by the Charter, is simply too important to leave to individual rulings.

To end this confusion, Martin must craft and introduce a strong shield law to protect journalists who want to keep their promises to confidential sources. The U.S. Congress is considering just such a law.

A shield law would make it harder for those with power and influence to intimidate potential whistleblowers, and avoid public scrutiny.

It would safeguard our right to know.
