Here is a BBC story on the worst song of all time, and the online "poll" has picked a novelty tune from one of the great classic rock albums:
The Beatles' 1968 song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da has been voted the worst song ever in an online poll.
The track was on the band's White Album - which is often regarded as one of the best albums ever made.
It was rated as being worse than former footballer Paul Gascoigne's Fog On The Tyne in a Mars survey of 1,000 people.
In third place was Meat Loaf's 1993 hit I'll Do Anything For Love, while 5ive, Cliff Richard, Vanilla Ice and Steps were also in the top 10.
To my new world eyes, this looks a little Britocentric.
Anyone who's heard Terry Jack's Seasons in the Sun knows, right down to their DNA, that it is clearly the worst song in history.
A sample of the lyrics:
Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A B C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there
We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time......
I can't believe of how just reading that dreck makes my blood pressure skyrocket.
Anyway, if you have a song you really hate, leave a comment.
The BBC is fishing for comments too. Here's the story link again.
Addendum
Somehow I forgot to mention We Like To Party, by the Venga Boys.
Here's a sample of their poetry:
The venga bus is comin & everybodys jumpin,
New York through San Francisco,
An Interstate free disco,
The wheels are still out turnin & traffic lights are burnin,
so if you like to party,
Get on and move your body
"New York to San Francisco/An Interstate freeway disco." Not exactly "How many roads/must a man walk down," but still timeless in its own way.
This "song" haunted me all summer because it was used in a commercial for a Six Flags amusement park in Darien Lakes, NY which played constantly on CTV Newsnet (monitoring it is part of my job).
Here's a snippet of the news release for the campaign:
The surprisingly spry, bald-headed character featured in the television spots travels in a colorful retro style bus bringing his signature music - "We Like to Party" by the Vengaboys - and an irresistible invitation to leave the boredom, stress and pressures of everyday life behind, to families across America.
I can now feel that familiar "da-da-da, dada/da-da-da, dada ..." pounding in my head.
I also consider Paul Anka's Havin' My Baby to be a worthy addition to any worst song list.
