An Afghan student journalist who was sentenced to death for blasphemy has told an appeals court that he confessed after being tortured.
Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh was convicted in January of insulting Islam.
But at the appeals court in Kabul the 24-year-old insisted he was innocent of all the charges.
He said he was tortured into confessing that he had disrupted university classes by asking questions about women's rights under Islam.
He was also convicted of distributing an article on the same subject, and adding three additional paragraphs.
He told the crowded, hour-long appeal hearing: "As a Muslim ... I never allow myself to do such a thing. These are totally lies."

Afghan student journo claims 'blasphemy' confession came under torture

Re: Afghan student journo claims 'blasphemy' confession came under torture
Whooee! Interesting twist. Instead of arguing that the death penalty for insulting Islam is OTT, he's now denying he insulted Islam. Sort of like that other case when the convert to Christianity was sentenced to death but got off on a technicality that did nothing to challenge the validity of the criminality of such conversion.
Why are we propping up Karzai's warlord-dominated Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its adherence to Shari'a law? Canadians are dying so these types of sentences can be meted out. JB Re: Re: Afghan student journo claims 'blasphemy' confession came under torture

I went to a panel discussion recently on Afghanistan. Two of the speakers were former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer and Bill Graham, his Canadian counterpart.
I asked them separately if NATO would be happy with a peace deal that would see Afghanistan re-Talibanized, if I may put it that way, but not providing safe harbour for those who would attack the West. Both said yes. Graham said NATO is there to provide stability, not to change the country. If those two gentlement are correct, Canadians are dying to allow the emergence of an austere, shari'a-based regime that doesn't host any al Qaeda training camps. Trackbacks
